HVG2 PS2 to PS3 Converter

Features:

  • Converts PS2 game controllers to use with PS3
  • Plug and Play compatibility
  • USB 2.0 Compatible
  • LED display players 1-4
  • Analog mode only

Info:

We did some small testing with this new converter from HVG2. It has the usual 4 LED lights to display which controller the converter is registered as but lacks the PS button that the Pelican Converter has. What worried us most was that the back of the box said it would work “Analog Mode” only. Plugging it in, we gave it a go.

For controllers like the PS2 Dual Shock and Hori Fighting Stick, it had no problems. We could land King Shining Wizard juggles and land Julia Japan combos. We didn’t feel much lag when trying it out on T5DR Online. Not bad so far… However, for sticks like the Tekken 5 Stick and Namco, the screen would always flash in and out from the PS button screen. This is because those sticks are digital signals. The converter was pretty much trying to find an analog button which wasn’t there. The Hori Fighting Stick has a “Mode” button to switch between analog and digital making it exempt. As you would guess, this would make using such controllers unplayable. With digital signals not working, that rules out most sticks like the HRAP and HRAP2‘s.

For custom-made sticks with analog PCB’s, however, it should work fine (because an analog option is on the board). So those with custom sticks looking for an alternative for the now hard-to-find Pelican Converter can look into this one.

Some further testing, we tried out a DDR pad, a Taiko controller, and a GH1 controller on it. Those are digital signals. Sure enough, the screen would again flash in and out from the PS button screen. For the GH1 controller, the buttons would be mapped wrong. Makes us wonder why they put pictures of some these controllers on the back…

Pretty whack converter overall but those with an analog controller or custom stick made from an analog PCB can at least get some benefit from it. It’s ok for Tekken but we’d still rather have a Pelican…

  • PS2 Dual Shock (analog button) — ok
  • Hori Fighting Stick (mode button) — ok
  • Custom Stick (analog PCB) — ok
  • Tekken 5 Stick — constant on off ps button
  • Namco Stick — constant on off ps button
  • RedOctane Pad — constant on off ps button
  • Taiko Controller — constant on off ps button
  • GH1 — buttons mapped wrong, yellow = red, blue = green

    Markman,

Maybe you can talk Pelican into reproducing those converters, since they were good for Tekken.

Wish I’d read your article before assuming the product package indicated the real capabilities of this product. It does NOT work with DDR pads. My 9 year old was very disappointed. I agree, “Makes us wonder why they put pictures of some these controllers on the back…”

Do you have the 8V pcb in your controller? This adapter has been confirm to work on the 3.5V and 7.5V ones.

I was wondering the same thing…Do you have the 8v, 7.5v or 3.5v for it to work? If you open up your stick from the bottom, the voltage will be labeled where all the wires are coming out from along w/other labels.
